Public Policy/Coalition Internship
Gang Alternative, Inc.’s (GA) Urban Partnership for Success Collaborative Miami and the Urban Partnership Drug-Free Communities Coalition (UPSCM & UPDFCC) is designed to synergize local prevention efforts to strengthen prevention capacity/infrastructure at the community level and more effectively, prevent onset and progression of substance abuse and abuse-related problems across high-risk communities and among persons aged 9-20.
GA is seeking an intern to support the implementation of the work plans for UPSCM and UPDFCC. The essential duties and responsibilities listed below will help the intern build valuable skills and knowledge about coalition work and policy research.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Researching recent evidence-based studies of alcohol/marijuana/opioid/meth use among children.
- Researching policies at the local, state, and federal level related to alcohol/marijuana/opioid/meth and its use among youth.
- Assist in exploring local ordinances on Marijuana, Opioids, Meth, and Alcohol.
- Assist in identifying and selecting the comprehensive, data-driven prevention strategies that work most effectively to prevent and reduce alcohol/marijuana//opioid abuse and abuse-related problems Identifying key stakeholders whose work can serve as an intersectional partnership to deliver effective policy change.
- Participate in project teams with community stakeholders on multi-county engagements for government and nonprofit representatives.
- Assist in developing effective prevention strategies and messaging in a target area.
- Assist with evidence-based analyses such as literature reviews, prevention studies, disease burden studies, health policy analysis.
- Assist in developing presentations on evidence-based research that supports the program’s current and future initiatives.
- Assist with prevention campaigns.
- Support the partnership’s mobilization of stakeholders to participate in Coalition activities and policy actions.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
- Completed (or in progress) Bachelor’s degree in public administration, political science, policy development, law, public health, community development, management, or related field.
- Demonstrated interest in community development and government relations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and ability to work effectively with youth and adult volunteers.
- Excellent organizational efficiency, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
- Strong prioritization, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Computer proficiency is required with demonstrated ability to use MS Office programs, Excel spreadsheets, mail merge, and other functions for contact management and reporting purposes.
- Excellent ability to read/write/speak English.
- Bi-lingual Creole/Spanish is preferred but not required.
- Excellent ability to follow directions and produce accurate and professional work products.
- This position may require independent travel between workstation and other sites. Consequently, the incumbent must maintain valid Driver’s License and insurance coverage on personal vehicle at all times during employment.
- Performing the duties of this position requires the ability to walk, sit, stand, reach, talk, hear and lift presentation materials, including equipment.
