November 2018 – The mission of Gang Alternative, Inc. (GA) is “to build character that lasts in children and families through positive alternatives to crime, violence, dependency, and delinquency by offering a holistic approach to their academic, physical, social, economic, and spiritual development.” GA is one of the premiere community-based organizations in South Florida providing positive youth development; workforce development; family strengthening; community upliftment and partnerships; and health and wellness programming to some of the State’s most disenfranchised communities. GA continuously explores new and innovative ideas to enhance its program offerings. Consequently, it is a blessing and an honor for GA to be the first nonprofit organization trained to implement The Academic Hustle Curriculum, the ultimate game plan for scholarships, internships and job offers. GA program managers, site coordinators, and youth prevention specialists were trained by curriculum developer and author, Matthew Pigatt, on implementation of this academic and career achievement system. This curriculum was crafted from Matthew’s national award-winning research on high-achieving black men and from his own personal transformation.
The Academic Hustle is designed to help high school students understand various approaches to career development and is founded on the pillars of education, experience, relationships and presentation.
GA works to connect youth to holistic services and tools to develop their full potential and character to become self-sufficient community stewards. The Academic Hustle is one such resource that will support GA in its ministry of preparing inner-city youth for career success in the 21st century workplace.GA presently works with 37 schools in South Florida, impacting the lives of over 1500 children and youth year.
The Academic Hustle will be implemented in GA’s existing Building Leaders of Character Program and Minority Violence Program at Miami North Western Senior High; Carrol City Senior High School; Central Senior High School; Edison Senior High School; North Miami High School; and Turner Technical School.
