Congratulations to Zavion Gillyard, Gang Alternative Inc.’s, Project RESIST’s newest scholarship recipient of the 2023 Healthy Relationship 1st place Book Scholarship in the amount of $500.00. The book scholarship will be used to support Zavion as he furthers his education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia on a full academic scholarship where he plans to study Business Administration with a focus in Management and Leadership studies.
Zavion’s motivation to succeed stems from being the product of a single-parent household, watching his mom struggle to make ends meet. He plans to pay her back by becoming successful. Zavion says “This scholarship was very important for me and my family as it has alleviated some expenses for us”. Zavion and his family are very grateful for this opportunity and express their gratitude to Gang Alternative for the opportunity.
While in Project RESIST’s program, Zavion learned to cope with his life circumstances. Zavion says, “Project RESIST taught me to strive for more, despite my traumatic life’s circumstances”. Zavion plans to use the communication and negotiation skills learned in Project RESIST to assist with his matriculation at Morehouse College. Zavion also stated that the Project RESIST Healthy Relationship course was the perfect preparation for his undergraduate studies. Zavion highlighted how the uncomfortable conversations around sex and drug use while in Project RESIST made him more likely to share pertinent information with his peers in college, that will assist them in making healthy and positive decisions. Zavion states, “As I continue to seek higher education at Morehouse, I will use the curriculum learned in the RESIST program to beneficial lifestyle in college. The lessons I learned helped me learn about the dangers of making unhealthy decisions and the importance of abstaining from non-marital sex”.
Here at Gang Alternative Inc, we‘re very proud of Zavion and look forward to seeing him apply all that he’s learned while in the program to the next level of his life. We will continue to follow Zavion on his journey. We wish Zavion the very best and we’re here to support him where needed.
